Oriental medicine has a high success rate in treating sub-fertile men and women and can be much less expensive and invasive than Western medical methods. We prefer to use the term sub fertility rather than infertility as it is more positive and conveys a sense of possibility and hope. This is what we at InMotion focus on, creating an environment of healing in the body so full term healthy babies can be born.
Acupuncture, when combined with herbs and massage, enhances our Jing, also known as our essence, our Qi which is our energy that enlivens and animates us, and our Shen which is the spirit in our hearts. While fertility is strongly related to age, it also strongly correlates with health and the balance of the energy in our meridians. Jing, Qi and Shen enhanced is just that.
Conditions that are precursors to sub-fertility are amenorrhea , anovulation, hypothyroidism, endometriosis, elevated FSH levels, immunological fertility issues, stress and low libido, luteal phase defects, recurrent miscarriages, unexplained subfertility, poor egg quality and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). We have encountered these conditions at InMotion many times. Clomid, injectibles , IVF and IUI are the mainstays of treatment in western medicine. Acupuncture and herbs can help if done for 3-4 months before the transfer and in some cases prevent the need for the IVF or IUI. If done with IVF or IUI, research has shown that the results are 35% better with the acupuncture accompanying the process including the day of transfer, both before and after.
Miscarriage is unfortunately a 15% possibility in many first time pregnancies which can be heartbreaking especially if it was difficult to conceive. Acupuncture helps to keep the pregnancy intact by lifting the spleen Qi, increasing the blood flow, detoxing the liver and warming the uterus. Once pregnant, treatments continue less frequently yet continuously through the end of the first trimester.
While pregnant the baby can present in a breech position. Acupuncture can often help to turn the baby quite successfully and thereby prevent c- sections often. When the time is right for delivery and all systems are “go” yet labor is not progressing in a timely way, acupuncture and massage can help to induce as well. There are special points that induce the flow of the hormone pitocin and help to descend the baby, thereby creating the successful delivery. These points can be stimulated with acupuncture needles accented by electric stimulation and massage by a skilled therapist certified in prenatal techniques.
In addition to Acupuncture and herbology ensuring a good healthy diet is a must. Often women are coached on good wholesome eating that promotes fertility. Becoming pregnant, staying pregnant and having a healthy baby and mother necessitate a healthy balanced chemistry which is facilitated by good eating.
