Our patients are coming in and complaining over and over again about how their allergies are so bad and dominating their health this spring. Having practiced now for 36 spring seasons, I can honestly say this is not a new complaint. Most patients do not understand how MUCH we can help with not only the symptoms, but with the underlying reason that their bodies succumb yearly!

This year with such a mild winter, St Louis is getting a heavy dose of earlier and more severe allergies. The reason for the severity is that the trees are full of pollen early due to the warmth and the bees are not here to pollinate the flowers.   The response then is more available and accessible pollen in the air.

An allergic response is due to an overly sensitive immune system that is unable to neutralize a normally harmless irritant effectively. A histamine response takes over and this is characterized by watery and swollen eyes, runny and stuffy nose, itching throat and eyes and or sinus pressure to name a few.

Genes and environmental/lifestyle factors play a large role in these sensitivities. If one is relatively stressed out and not able to cope well from a physiological standpoint, the adrenal glands fail to function adequately. The adrenal glands have an inefficient use of cortisol which doesn’t effectively neutralize the irritants and then this forces the histamine reaction.

Allergies are an immune issue and can be helped with many other treatments besides medications and allergy shots. It may take a while to build the immune system and yet immediate short term relief can still be given with natural antihistamines, foods, acupuncture and even chiropractic treatments.

Remedies that you can employ include a diet rich in antioxidants such as FRESH fruits and vegetables which can be well supplemented with Juice Plus . Eating local honey will also help build immunity. Omega 3 EPA/DHA supplementation helps with inflammation. Minimizing alcohol and any fermented products will help. Taking grains out of your diet may help if your digestive system is weakened with Leaky Gut Syndrome. Increasing Vitamin C rich foods, and adding Quercetin supplements and Magnesium also build your constitution.

Consider an immune package for yourself which will include an acupuncture assessment followed by a series of treatments. The length of the treatment series depends on the overall health of the person, the severity of the symptoms and the goals, either short or long term. This is accomplished by moving energy in the lung/large intestine and spleen/stomach meridians primarily. Enhancing the flow of the chi is what will build the immunity.

Supplementation will vary from short term antihistamine supplements to longer acting Chinese Herbs , glandular supplements and dietary recommendations. The prescription varies with the individual yet includes some of all of these.

I hope I have shed some light on suffering from allergies and asthma for you. Questions are invited and feel free to answer here, set up an appointment or email me at drfitelson@imhc.com.

Please join us for the InMotion Health Center Grand Opening Party at our new Brentwood location! True to our name, we have literally been "in motion" as we set up our new home. You are cordially invited to check out our expanded facility and learn more about our center and services. There will be tours, awesome prize raffles, free chair massages and good food and drinks, so please drop by to say hello and get to know us better!

InMotion Health Center has served the communities of Richmond Heights and Clayton for over 20 years. In January of 2016, we relocated to a larger and more modern space in the University Tower across from the Galleria on Brentwood Blvd, Suite 300B   We are now even closer to Highways I-64/40 and 170 and the Metro Link station is a only short walk from our doors!

I created InMotion Health Center 20 years ago with the vision that restoring good health requires the whole person be treated. Our center employs a variety of cutting edge approaches that are integrated specifically for the individual patient and delivered by a complementary group of caring professionals. My belief is that informed patients will make the greatest strides in attaining whole health and that knowledge will provide them with lifelong  tools to maintain that well-being.

Our new larger space gives our InMotion staff the room to grow and at the same time provides a more efficient flow to center activities. The building has Physical Therapists on site, Pilates classes, a larger area for our expanding Posture and Core training programs, and a Massage Therapy department that offers a wider array of services. Also, online booking is now available for massage and new patient appointments with our doctors.  We are committed to providing the same excellent services spearheaded by Dr. Sharon Fitelson and Dr Gregory Neff working together now for 20 years!

Our Chiropractic care will now be complemented with more rehabilitative exercises and followed by a Posture training and or Core program for those patients wanting to optimize and maintain their results into the future.  Acupuncture treatments often include herbology, dietary strategies and or relaxation protocols. Our hormonal consultations include in depth screenings, with Saliva and Urine testing as appropriate, and are followed by life style remediation individualized for each person. To blend all facets of health together, we have been providing the Shape ReClaimedTM service now for 5 years.  This protocol corrects hormonal imbalances to reduce inflammation, shed extra pounds  and inches and help the body restore itself to better health and well-being.

Please join us for our Grand Opening Party on Friday March 4th from 4-7pm and Saturday March 5th from 10-1pm.  The event will include a happy and healthy hour with food and drinks, facility tours, free chair massages. We will also be raffling off prizes, including massage gift certificates, workout packages, yoga lessons, healthy food, foam rollers,  exercise balls and more!   We hope to see you and your family for a weekend of wellness!

Having practiced medicine now for 35 years, I have seen diets come and go and become fads for a while. I have even participated in some of them over the years. The term “diets don’t work” is not a cliché because the results rarely last. Most diets focus on weight loss as the primary intention and not on becoming healthy. Metabolically speaking, the body cannot keep weight off if it is inflamed and diseased.   The fat comes back out of protection and need as inflamed tissue is a magnet for water and fat retention.

5 years ago I was introduced to SHAPE ReClaimed and it made sense to me due to my education regarding health and well-being. I decided to try it for myself along with another staff member before bringing it to InMotion’s patients. Not only did I feel great on the program, but I became more energetic, my mind was clearer and oh, by the way, I lost pounds and inches that needed to go.

SHAPE ReClaimed is not about what you will lose as much as it is about what you will gain!!!!

Many people who are challenged by their weight are chronically stressed out. Stress is a major player in hormone imbalance and affects our entire system. Not all of us recognize our state of stress due to coping mechanisms and efforts to overcome the deleterious effects.  Stress hormones hold onto fat. Too much stress then shows up around the belly which sets us up for many problems from type 2 diabetes, heart disease to cancer, and dementia.

Belly fat is inflammatory and immunosuppressive in nature. Other fat is insulative and protective and necessary for energy. The body’s innate intelligence recognizes which to use and which to store. Unfortunately, the most prevalent food in today’s world is inflammatory. Sugar, meat, alcohol, dairy and caffeine especially daily and in excess, are the reason that so many people are putting on too much weight and inches.

Until recently, hormone imbalance has been considered a “women’s” issue because women’s symptoms are more complex and pronounced, especially with the aging process.

Today, however, we know that hormone imbalance must be addressed by men, women and children before symptoms occur . Men, for instance, are directly affected by age-related hormone changes as much as women, and should be checked out regularly to age successfully and easily. Children with hormone issues will demonstrate learning difficulties, failure to thrive, and/or weight problems, which can and should be addressed as soon as possible.

Hormones are quite intricate, complex and ever-changing. This means they need to be re-evaluated from time to time.

Hormones are chemical messengers created by the brain. There are many different hormones that have a profound interaction with each other, so any evaluation should take into consideration the whole function and not just an individual component.   Peri-menopause, menopause, and andropause (the male “change of life”) happen to all of us as we reach midlife.  The results/symptoms of this change is different, however, depending on lifestyle, overall health, and the complex interactions of all of the other hormones.

Doctors are now regularly seeing more and more unwanted hormone-related conditions such as PMS, Infertility, Endometriosis, Uterine Fibroids, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, Breast cysts, Prostate hypertrophy, hypoadrenia  and hypothyroidism.   The incidence of these conditions is rising due to the environmental prevalence of chemicals, stress, and processed foods in our diets. For patients who are not aware and proactive about hormone health, imbalances are likely to occur and manifest into symptoms.

To get ahead of the curve, one must be proactive and have a lifestyle, toxicity and hormone assessment. If not assessed and treated early enough, conditions such as obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, cancers, infertility and a host of autoimmune diseases slowly and insidiously develop.

Holistic physicians are now becoming more involved in the evaluation and treatment of these conditions. We believe the best strategy is to assess and put together a natural treatment plan BEFORE changes occur. Options are varied, and at InMotion, we specifically tailor programs that are unique to each patient. First, we might look at saliva and hair analyses to get objective data. Followed by food diaries, temperature charts and toxicity questionnaires, we map out your plan of action. This can include treatments such as Acupuncture to balance energy, diet strategies and supplementations to enhance cellular repair and optimal function, hormone replacement to create chemical balance, weight loss programs to deflame all tissues, exercise to enhance the weight loss and minimize back pain, and massage to complement all of the above.

Our goal is to empower each patient with the resources they need to take care of themselves and their families. We arm our patients, not only with knowledge, but with an understandable and achievable action plan .
