After years of being an effective Chiropractor in St. Louis , I decided to bring two very useful programs to our patients so they could, in effect, be empowered to continue their good results and not HAVE to endure repetitive episodes of ongoing pain and distress. And, in fact, so many of our motivated patients have wanted to know how to stay out of pain and what they can do for themselves!
Chiropractic care is very effective at moving spinal segments and enhancing the balance that needs to be in place once movement is in play. Biomechanical factors that affect the spine are foot and ankle dysfunction, pelvic unleveling due to short anatomical or functional legs, scoliosis and other abnormal curves. Add to that the postures of work and sport that are repetitive, and then you have ongoing stressors that play into the pain.
Strengthening your Core and thereby improving your Posture can keep you out of pain and support all of the good work that you have done with your Chiropractor to enhance proper spinal motion. The muscles that surround and support the spine are inherently weak and need proper strengthening. Often people hurt themselves trying to strengthen those muscles and that is what brings them into our office.
Our Posture program is aimed at systematically addressing an individual’s overall posture and starts with “before” pictures and end with “after” pictures that show the differences. Great attention to detail and explanation of how their weakness and imbalance exist are woven into the exercises and the patient is thereby very informed. A series of exercises take place over 7 consecutive weeks and address the upper back/neck and the trunk/low back ultimately as an integrated and synergistic functioning unit. 10 minutes per day at home is recommended for best results and is to be continued after the program is completed!
The Core program is more advanced and is a 30 minute workout that encompasses the entire body including arms and legs, not just the Core. This is for people without current pain who are in need of a thorough program to do on their own which will employ a “safe” back workout. The doctors have input into this program so our patients get the best workout for their body. This is an 8 week program and many people continue into phases 2 and 3 which are more advanced.
Our initial examinations always include postural biomechanics and are explained in great detail to the patient in their Report of Findings. Often people will say “I will try to sit up straighter and pull my shoulders back”. Unfortunately we do not remember to do that all of the time. Our biggest ally is muscle memory created by effectively building the muscles that will do the job and stretching the others. Unfortunately so many people hurt themselves at the gym. Our patients are coming in and complaining over and over again about how their allergies are so bad and dominating their health this spring. Having practiced now for 36 spring seasons, I can honestly say this is not a new complaint. Most patients do not understand how MUCH we can help with not only the symptoms, but with the underlying reason that their bodies succumb yearly!
This year with such a mild winter, St Louis is getting a heavy dose of earlier and more severe allergies. The reason for the severity is that the trees are full of pollen early due to the warmth and the bees are not here to pollinate the flowers. The response then is more available and accessible pollen in the air.
An allergic response is due to an overly sensitive immune system that is unable to neutralize a normally harmless irritant effectively. A histamine response takes over and this is characterized by watery and swollen eyes, runny and stuffy nose, itching throat and eyes and or sinus pressure to name a few.
Genes and environmental/lifestyle factors play a large role in these sensitivities. If one is relatively stressed out and not able to cope well from a physiological standpoint, the adrenal glands fail to function adequately. The adrenal glands have an inefficient use of cortisol which doesn’t effectively neutralize the irritants and then this forces the histamine reaction.
Allergies are an immune issue and can be helped with many other treatments besides medications and allergy shots. It may take a while to build the immune system and yet immediate short term relief can still be given with natural antihistamines, foods, acupuncture and even chiropractic treatments.
Remedies that you can employ include a diet rich in antioxidants such as FRESH fruits and vegetables which can be well supplemented with Juice Plus . Eating local honey will also help build immunity. Omega 3 EPA/DHA supplementation helps with inflammation. Minimizing alcohol and any fermented products will help. Taking grains out of your diet may help if your digestive system is weakened with Leaky Gut Syndrome. Increasing Vitamin C rich foods, and adding Quercetin supplements and Magnesium also build your constitution.
Consider an immune package for yourself which will include an acupuncture assessment followed by a series of treatments. The length of the treatment series depends on the overall health of the person, the severity of the symptoms and the goals, either short or long term. This is accomplished by moving energy in the lung/large intestine and spleen/stomach meridians primarily. Enhancing the flow of the chi is what will build the immunity.
Supplementation will vary from short term antihistamine supplements to longer acting Chinese Herbs , glandular supplements and dietary recommendations. The prescription varies with the individual yet includes some of all of these.

I created InMotion Health Center 20 years ago with the vision that restoring good health requires the whole person be treated. Having practiced medicine now for 35 years, I have seen diets come and go and become fads for a while. I have even participated in some of them over the years. The term “diets don’t work” is not a cliché because the results rarely last. Most diets focus on weight loss as the primary intention and not on becoming healthy. Metabolically speaking, the body cannot keep weight off if it is inflamed and diseased. The fat comes back out of protection and need as inflamed tissue is a magnet for water and fat retention.
